Based on vast statistical data about spreading of urinary stone disease both in the world in general and in Ukraine in particular, the author states that the phenomenon bears local-regional peculiarities and is caused by such factors as social-economical, pollution of the environment, climatic, hydrochemical peculiarities of the drinking water and geological one. With the growth of living standards, not only the spreading of urolithiasis among adults increases, but also the difference in number of cases among males and females decreases. At the same time a decrease of number of cases of urolithiasis of lower urinary tracts among boys is observed. With the increase of living standards portion of urate stones decreases whereas the percentage of oxalates and phosphates grows. Associations of continuous rows are the most widespread ones, to which belong such associations as apatite-struvite, whewellite-apatite, weddelite-apatite and weddelite-whewellite. Peculiarities of individuals and aggregates of stone forming minerals correspond to such of geological formations. It has been proved that urolites are formed as the result of sedimentation, crystallization and vital activity of microorganisms. In the process of sedimentation, concretionary phosphate, oxalate, urate and urolites of mixed type are formed, whereas direct crystallization causes formation of brushite, struvite, oxalate, urate and cystine spherulites. Globular whewellite and weddelite apatite urolites are the activity products of microorganisms. Amorphous organic substance mostly plays binding role by sedimentary process of stone formation. The results of the study will help develop new approaches in treatment and preventive measures of urolithiasis.
