The thesis is devoted to the study of the phenomenon of sacred singing, its structure, development and stabilization in Chernihiv Region at the beginning of the 20th century. The author reconstructs and determines the main directions in the development of sacred singing in the musical culture of the region: concert activity, musical education, Fraternity choral movement, musical enlightenment activity. It is for the first time in the musical studies of this country that the thesis describes the Fraternity choral movement in Chernihiv region which displayed itself in the organization of amateur church choirs. The names of outstanding precentors, organizers and leaders of church choirs, are introduced into scientific use. Some of them are M.Stupnitsky, G.Ivantsov, P.Zelenetsky, l.Topol.
The materials of analysis are numerous archive documents and periodicals of the time as well as musical choral samples of the repertoire of the Fraternity choirs.
