In the dissertation the source study base and a level of scientific development of military - engineering of the old Russian state is investigated. The author generalises sights of scientists concerning a place and roles of military - engineering during conducting defensive and offensive actions. The isolated data on structure of military - engineering are shown, their origin and tendencies of development are investigated; purpose (assignment), a structure and place of fortification constructions in defense system, both of separate regions, and the state as a whole are found out. Influence of next peoples on improvement of the theory and practice of defensive construction is revealed. Practical recommendations for use in national and military - patriotic education of military men the armed Forces of Ukraine are formulated.
