Storozhenko V.O. Activity of antioxidative system in chloroplasts of wheat plants under water stress and salinity. – Manuscript.
Thesis for Ph. D. degree by speciality 03.00.12 – plant physiology – Institute of plant physiology and genetics, National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Kyiv, 2005.
The dissertation is devoted to the study of the superoxide dismutase (SOD) and ascorbate peroxidase (APX) activity in chloroplasts of spring wheat plants grown under conditions of soil salinity, drought and combined action of these stress factors in relation to the functional state of photosynthetic apparatus.
the peculiarities in antioxidant ensymes reaction of two spring wheat cultivars with different tolerance to the soil salinity there were revealed. It was shown that salt and drought tolerance of spring wheat is in the close relations with antioxidant system activity in chloroplasts. It is shown, that under combined stress the phenomenon of cross adaptation take place at the level of chloroplast antioxidant enzyme activities. The causes of photosynthesis rate decrease under salinity and water deficit are discussed. the strong negative correlation between the rate of photosynthesis in leaves and SOD activity in chloroplasts and positive correlation between the grain mass from one ear and the ratio of the enzymes activities SOD/APX was found.
The results may be used as the theoretical basis for creation of new test systems for salt and drought tolerance of plants.
Key words: superoxide dismutase, ascorbate peroxidase, photosynthetic apparatus, drought, salinity, combined stress.
